Midnight and the Meaning of Love
A few years back I could not wait for the 2nd edition to Sista Souljah Midnight collection to come out. I became a fan of her work when I first read "The coldest Winter Ever". When "Midnight A Gangsta's Love Story" appeared on the scene I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Midnight was one of the characters in "The Coldest Winter Ever". His parts in that book were small but he definitely made a lasting impression on readers and apparently on Sista Souljah herself.
Well, after reading the first Midnight book, "Midnight: A Gangsta's Love Story" I was very excited to get my hands on the second book. I think I read it all in one day and since then I've read and reread it over and over. These two books offer so much more than a great story. As an African American woman it offers an out of the box look at our culture.
After reading the first Midnight book I must say that I was a little miffed at Miss. Souljah and I wrote her all about my thoughts and feelings, which to my surprise she responded to. I felt very honored. No, not because she responded but that she actually engaged me in conversation that was so deep her words have never left me. I have since then kept my promise to her not to share those exchanges with anyone, but I've been tempted.
But, anywho!! Back to the book. If you haven't already checked this book out you are definitely missing out on one good read. Souljah definitely delivers a great love story with adventure mixed with different cultures, new ideas along with her activist voice ringing prominently throughout the novel.
If you've never read any of her books I suggest you start from the beginning and read "The Coldest Winter Ever", followed by, "Midnight: A Gangsta's Love Story", and finally "Midnight and the Meaning of Love". And if you've read all of those books and you enjoy them you might want to check out Souljah's latest novel, "A Deeper Love Inside: The Porsche Santiaga Story." And if you still haven't gotten enough of Sista Souljah check out her autobiography "No Disrespect".
Sista Souljah's website offers a podcast for each of her books including herself that you might want to check out as well along with lecture topics, upcoming events that she will be speaking at, and her own personal reading list.
I enjoyed this book and its characters so much that I did a few vlogs (video blogs) on each of the characters including a very popular one on Bangs. I suggest that you read the books first because there are a few spoilers. Midnight's and Bangs' vlog is at the bottom. Please check it out and don't forget to comment and let me know your own thoughts.
"Midnight and the Meaning of Love along with all of Sista Souljouh's books can be found for pretty decent prices on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Google books, not to mention your local library for free!!!
